Summary Description: The Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation (GSAPP) is seeking candidates for a full-time Officer of Research (in the rank of Associate Research Scholar, Research Scholar, or Senior Research Scholar) for Outreach & Community-Based Design. The position, within the School's Master of Science in Architecture and Urban Design (UD) Program, will report to the Director of the UD Program, and will focus on community outreach, urban analysis, applied community-driven design, and project writing. The Research Scholar for Community Outreach & Design will work to enable students and faculty at Columbia University GSAPP to engage in community-based design practice, applied research and scholarship, and establish sustained community engagement strategies and partnerships. Central to the position of the Research Scholar is guiding the Hudson Valley Initiative, led by GSAPP's Urban Design program. The Hudson Valley Initiative (HVI) facilitates applied research into the complex spatial, ecological, and economic opportunities of the Hudson Valley region. The initiative is led by the Urban Design program at the GSAPP, with the primary mission of fostering collaboration among programs at the GSAPP and among local non-profits, NGOs, and other public and private organizations in the region. As a long-term project, the HVI enables students and faculty at Columbia University to engage in community-based design practice, applied research and scholarship beyond semester-based curricula and establish sustained community engagement strategies and partnerships within the region. Responsibilities will be to perform research collaboration with the Director and Assistant Director and aligned faculty to develop projects, participate in community events, visit sites, write research and grant proposals, and create materials for inclusion in reports or websites. The position may include working with professors across diverse disciplines in the GSAPP and across the University including Journalism, Lamont Earth Sciences, E3B, the Tamer Center, etc. The candidate will assist faculty, students and program partners to conduct research and interviews and develop program-related publications such as books and website content. The Research Scholar is expected to create and nurture a constituency inside and outside the GSAPP and serve as the liaison between the two. He/she will work in the Urban Design office and will serve as the spokesperson for the HVI, along with the program director, and strive to make the HVI a key voice in the ongoing changes in the region.More specifically, the research scholar will:- Draft a larger research agenda for community outreach and community-based design practice and develop an overall framework together with the director, assistant director, and appropriate faculty- Assist with grant writing and fundraising in coordination with the Dean's office & Director of Strategic Initiatives- Organize school-wide and public events, programming and communications, working with appropriate GSAPP administrative personnel- Assist with managing and editing a publication on relevant topics- Work with GSAPP program heads and interested faculty to develop Hudson Valley-based curricula, projects, and other research, and cultivate meaningful partners within the University- Establish and expand relationships between GSAPP students and faculty with Hudson Valley regional and local community groups, organizations, institutions and elected officials- Develop and maintain the "Hudson Valley Atlas", an archive and/or database of HV materials to be shared with GSAPP and non-GSAPP partners as appropriate
Minimum Qualifications: Candidates must have a Master's degree or the equivalent, Master's level training in urban design, urban planning, community relations, or a related field is preferred. The demonstrated ability to oversee and manage a team is strongly preferred. Candidates will have the ability to do collaborative and cross-disciplinary research and ability to convey specialized knowledge to students and faculty working in the Program. Job requirements include a select combination of excellent verbal and written communication, presentation and visual design skills, data management, proficiency with design software, attention to detail and persistent pursuit of excellence, accuracy and consistency, demonstrated experience with collaborative research across academic departments. Candidates for professional officer of research positions are expected to have established their ability to conduct original, independent research in community-based design. Senior research scholars' qualifications and contributions to their fields of research must be equivalent to those of a full professor; research scholars' equivalency is with the qualifications of an associate professor; associate research scholars' equivalency is assistant professor.
Preferred Qualifications: Preferred qualifications include publication in recognized media and conference presentations.
