Pay Grade: 37 The person in this position will fabricate new prototype analog and digital electronic, mechanical, and electro-mechanical devices and perform repairs and maintenance of some departmental equipment. They are expected to design electrical devices to meet the needs of faculty, students, and graduate students for use in instructional and research projects in the Department of Chemistry. Such projects will involve concept design of advanced electronic instrumentation, electro-mechanical devices, CAD visualization and device construction. Duties and Responsibilities: Design and construction of electronics for use in scientific experiments Troubleshooting problems in electronic circuits to determine the source of the problem and identifying failed components. Repair of electronic problems in minor and major scientific instrumentation Identifying and ordering parts needed to complete construction and repair of scientific instrumentation Coordination of electronic and mechanical aspects of scientific instrumentation fabrication Maintain electronic test equipment and utilize in circuit analysis Maintain continuity among other staff by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities, and continuing needs. Communicate status of projects to the customers, including indicating delays and reasons for delays. Document actions by completing production and quality logs. Any other tasks requested by Department Head or Immediate Supervisor. CAD and CAM programming for device fabrication Computer Software and Hardware Support Linux knowledge a plus
Qualifications Minimum Requirements: Education: Associates degree in Electronics; training in AutoCAD or solidworks. Experience: Three years of experience in electronics troubleshooting, repair and design. Programming experience in Visual BASIC, Lab View, and Cam languages. Must be able to manipulate and create graphs and spreadsheets in Excel. Must be proficient in MS office software. Experienced in use of Autocad software. Job Skills: The ability to converse and consult with graduate students and faculty on unique electrical and mechanical design problems to produce novel equipment. The ability to design complex analog and digital electronic circuit diagrams from scratch. The ability to implement electronic circuit designs into functional circuits and instruments. The ability to visualize design flaws and virtually create parts for review before committing to manufacturing of parts. The ability to integrate electronic and mechanical components into functional designs. The ability to troubleshoot electronic circuit problems and identify component failures. The ability to repair minor scientific instrumentation Through consultation with manufacturers, be able to identify the source of electronic problems in major scientific instrumentation and enact repairs. Have working knowledge of CAD software, such as AutoCad or solidworks. Have working knowledge of CAM software (feature cam or master cam) Have a knowledge of Microsoft Office software and general computer operations. Have the ability to communicate effectively with co-workers, supervisors, faculty, staff, and students and other university personnel to understand and perform the desired work and to suggest better alternatives. Be able to interact with a diverse group of scientists from many different cultures and work with them in a respectful, cooperative manner. Have good judgement, be able to stay on task, and pay attention to detail. Have a knowledge of Environmental, Health and Safety requirements. Be reliable in attendance, clean and neat in appearance, be in good physical health and able to perform moderately strenuous work activities.
