Essential Job Duties:
As a Research Assistant, this position will analyze research data related to the collection and analysis of exotic plant pest data with application to early warning systems for plant health and serve as a technical writer/editor in support of USDA/APHIS/PPQ and CIPM cooperative activities per the Development of New Pest Response Guidelines for Selected Pests (NPRG).
This position will determine the information required to produce reports for an early warning system designed to help protect U.S. agriculture from exotic plant pests. This position will write/edit and design/format project documents/communications; edit, fact-check, and ensure consistent style of weekly deliverable reports; monitor and analyze information about invasive plant pests; and enter information into the project web site. The individual will be required to work closely with others in a team environment. This position will assist in managing document bibliographies using Endnote reference management software and upload final reference lists to in-house database. Additional responsibilities may include (and are not limited to) performing background literature searches; correspondence with subject matter experts; and managing translation services.
This position will interface with Federal cooperators to determine project requirements. Occasionally this research associate will write report articles for weekly deliverable; maintain project team manual; work with programmer to design, update, and test project web site; and giving oral presentations.
This position may have additional opportunities in the areas of pest risk analysis, international trade regulation, and invasive species management.
Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree, or relevant Bachelor’s degree plus 3 or more years of independent research experience, or substantative relevant independent experience and education. May require terminal degree and licensure.
Excellent written communication skills and a high level of scientific literacy in English.
Proficient computer skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite.
Possess meticulous work habits, attention to detail, exceptional spelling ability, comprehensive understanding of the rules of grammar, and good reading comprehension.
Ability to apply basic scientific knowledge to tables, graphs, and figures.
Demonstrate the ability to manage multiple tasks under tight deadlines, help manage editorial work flow to ensure that tasks are completed on time.
Willingness to work closely with a diverse group of scientists as a dependable team player.
Biological science background or knowledge of entomology and/or plant pathology terms.
Experience with reference management software (eg, EndNote).
Scientific literacy in one or more foreign languages is desirable.
