The School of Industrial and Labor Relations at Cornell University has an opening for a Communication and Website Coordinator for The Worker Institute (WI) located in the New York City ILR Extension Division. The Worker Institute at Cornell engages in research and education on contemporary labor issues to generate innovative thinking and solutions to problems related to work, economy and society. The Communications and Website Coordinator will work under the direction of the Worker Institute Leadership Team.
Working collaboratively with the Worker Institute faculty and the ILR School's Communications and Marketing Department, the Communications and Website Coordinator will lead and execute the communications, marketing, publicity and outreach efforts of the Worker Institute with responsibilities including: expand the public profile of The Worker Institute as a leading institution that generates innovative thinking and bold solutions to problems related to work, economy and society; lead and develop communication projects and oversee the implementation of comprehensive communications plans that leverage traditional and digital media on behalf of The Worker Institute; design and implement digital marketing strategies for The Worker Institute; develop written content for articles, website postings and social media; design and edit e-newsletters; analyze communication indicators such as website hits to determine outreach effectiveness; serve as webmaster for The Worker Institute. This position will also provide strategic guidance on digital marketing and communications for Union Communication Services, a project of The Worker Institute.
The position is located in ILR School NYC office and requires independence, creativity, the ability to work with a geographically dispersed and diverse staff, and the ability to handle a fast-paced work environment.
Bachelor's degree in public relations, communications or journalism
Three to four years of experience in communications, marketing and/or public relations
Excellent oral and written communications skills, strong editorial and proof-reading skills and high level of attention to detail; Detailed-oriented, able to handle multiple tasks efficiently and accurately
Strong knowledge of the labor movement and a deep understanding of Worker Institute initiatives, including topics such as precarious work, labor and environment, gender equity and leadership development
Excellent track record of success in working with news media
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and in teams to complete assignments; excellent organizational and project management skills
Ability to convene and manage teams and follow up on in-progress tasks
Ability to gather data, analyze data, and make decisions based on data; experience with running and evaluating online marketing campaigns
Proven website management experience, including work with content management systems, especially Drupal
Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook
Knowledge of email list management best practices and email marketing platforms, particularly Vertical Response and MailChimp.
Strong grasp of social media strategy and proficiency with tools such as TweetDeck and HootSuite
Significant experience writing for the media and for a range of marketing and communications applications
Working with, briefing and managing vendors including graphic designers and photographers
Ability to devise creative and innovative digital marketing and public relations strategies and solutions
Five to six years of experience in communications, marketing and/or public relations
Three or more years of prior employment at a union or worker justice organization
Experience in database design, management and migration, particularly with CRMs such as Salesforce
Strong understanding of data analysis, with ability to assess communications efficacy using Excel, Google Analytics, and a range of social media and email marketing analysis tools
Understanding of digital roles and processes required for complex web projects, with a working knowledge of web project management tools such as Pivotal Tracker
Strong visual design skills with working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, InDesign & Acrobat
