eOriginal is looking for a technical writer to maintain and upgrade its user education resources, which includes release notes, user manuals, online help, configuration manuals, eLearning and training materials (slides and workbooks), support knowledgebase articles and API / schema documentation. We require a highly productive, skilled, organized and passionate technical communicator, who can take the lead on defining documentation strategy while also delivering in a hands-on role, updating and building on the suite of materials that have been already produced.
The role covers documentation for a substantial web application. The eOriginal SaaS solution provides a rich set of eAsset management features, accessed by users and configured by administrators via Command Center, our web-based UI. SmartSign Web is a comprehensive system for eSignature, used by consumers to sign financial documents, and used by users and administrators to set up templates and configure business rules. Customers integrate eOriginal's solution with their business systems and automate many operations using the API, requiring extensive developer documentation and samples. The built-in business rules engine allows customers to tailor the application to their unique processes, and requires explanations which explain how to use technical functionality to solve business challenges.
This role requires a blending technical communication skill with an understanding of how our users, developers and administrators think.
While the Technical Writer is not required to have the skills of a professional graphic designer, they need to be able to format pages clearly (using styles as appropriate), and they need to be able to produce screenshots and basic artwork (which might subsequently be professionally produced) to graphically represent concepts and workflows.
Initiative and a desire to "see if for yourself" and "do it yourself" is highly appropriate, as the technical writer must bridge the world of eOriginal's software development and the user's business context. You will need to learn (largely by teaching yourself) how to use the system as a user, administrator and developer, so that you can effectively produce documentation. Experience working with software developers and QA in an Agile methodology is strongly preferred.
As a seasoned technical writer, you are likely already a member of the Society of Technical Communicators (STC), and / or a member of Meetups and other associations relating to technical writing. You should be up to date with the latest advances in technical writing, presentation of technical content and information architecture (e.g. structured authoring and DITA), and you likely have published articles on the web on various technical writing topics.
Ideally you will be able to describe your process for proactively seeking feedback from users on documentation, and can explain how that feedback has shaped how you have approached documentation going forward.
From your experience in producing documentation within the demanding timelines of commercial software releases, you have developed practical techniques for effectively managing your time and delivering to plan. You understand the importance of style guides, templates and consistent terminology.
eOriginal's customers are in Financial Services. Our customers originate loans, leases and mortgages and manage those assets on the secondary market. The business context of our customers includes securitization and collateralization. Familiarity with this domain is preferred.
3+ years’ experience writing systems and user documentation in a commercial software environment, ideally SaaS-based web applications.
Demonstrated experience in meeting high pressure documentation deadlines.
Willingness and ability to work in a team, ideally in an Agile environment.
Demonstrated commitment to learning and keeping up to date with technical communication techniques and tools.
Bachelor’s Degree, either in a technical discipline (e.g. Computer Science) or a writing / Communications discipline. If the former, you will need to submit a portfolio of technical writing samples. If the latter, you will need to demonstrate technical proficiency through relevant work experience.
