The University Marketing department (Creative Services) represents and promotes Cal Poly, increasing its visibility and supporting the institution's mission, vision, and goals. The unit creates the brand design, strategy, and campaigns to attract the best students, engage parents, alumni and donors, and recruit world-class faculty and staff.
The Interactive Web Designer is a position with broad and independent responsibilities for leading and implementing University Marketing's digital user experience strategies. The core functions of this position are to oversee and coordinate the University's web design and user experience strategies in a complex information environment. The incumbent works closely with users at all levels and provides direction for the University's web presence, develops new solutions to address user needs, implements changes based on usability research, and contributes expertise and leadership in designing solutions for how users interact with the University in both virtual and physical environments. Core skills required include front- end web development, interaction design, multimedia development, user research, user consultation, communication and coordination.
The Information Technology Consultant (ITC)-Career level is broad and includes intermediate through senior level positions. Incumbents at this level work relatively independently and possess the experience to be fully proficient in performing most or all of the work assignments defined for their position. Typically, incumbents have acquired the requisite skills and knowledge through a combination of education, training, and progressive work experience to be able to demonstrate competence in independently applying technical judgment to standard and nonstandard applications and systems, solving a wide range of problems and developing practicable and thorough solutions, and using effective communication and listening skills.

Minimum Qualifications (Staff Only):
Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university. Three years of technical or administrative experience. A graduate degree in a related field may be substituted for one year of the required experience. Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.
Expertise in design of both static websites and applications with complex, interactive UIs and AI for both desktop and mobile contexts.
Demonstrate basic knowledge of data and file structures and related utilities.
Knowledge of user-centered design principles, web industry standards and trends, platform standards, and the prototyping and software development process.
Demonstrated ability to apply usability research methods.
Knowledge of qualitative and quantitative user research methodologies and analysis techniques; ability to translate insights into actionable design recommendations; demonstrated skills creating and using web analytics.
Demonstrated ability to perform a variety of tasks using a high degree of creativity and ingenuity.
Advanced knowledge of web and mobile technologies, and working knowledge of responsive design methodologies.
Comprehensive knowledge of HTML5 and CSS3, Web Content Management Systems.
Strong understanding of how brand messaging design and content relate and work together.
Demonstrated user-centered design focus and use of latest trends and UX design.
Proficiency with user interface design patterns.
Proficiency with Wordpress and customizing themes and plugins.
Proficiency with Drupal.
Demonstrated experience designing for larger entity with multiple stakeholders and departments.
Strong information architecture and visual design skills, with ability to create wireframes and sitemaps.
Ability to administer system security standards and best practices.
Expertise in user interface design patterns and standard user-centered design methodologies including intercept surveys, participatory design, and A/B testing.
Working knowledge of copyright laws and implementing accessibility standards.
Proficiency with a variety of computer applications including word-processing, spreadsheets, databases, desktop and publishing software including Adobe Creative Suite software: InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Adobe Creative Cloud and associated design tools.
Demonstrated ability to develop and deliver technical training and create user documentation.
Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines in a dynamic, iterative environment.
Ability to provide lead work direction and supervise students.
Demonstrated strong customer service experience.
Strong interpersonal skills and excellent communication skills, including ability to communicate with technical and non-technical audiences; ability to effectively communicate and present ideas and concepts verbally and in written and presentation format and use consultative and facilitation skills to gain consensus in a collegial manner.
Willingness and ability to quickly learn new technologies.
Demonstrated knowledge of social media integration into web design.
Strong conceptualization and visual communication ability.
Exceptional attention to detail.
Strong problem solving skills and independent self-direction.
Ability to work independently and in a team environment in a culturally diverse user community.
Ability to write clear and concise reports and correspondence. Thorough knowledge of English grammar, spelling and punctuation.
Ability to identify, develop, and coordinate plans for use of site resources and to define site procedures for ongoing administration and maintenance.
Working knowledge of or ability to quickly learn University infrastructure, policies and procedures.
Demonstrated skills in an institutional/educational environment utilizing a customer-oriented and service-centered attitude.
Experience in email design.

Must be willing to travel and attend training programs off-site for occasional professional development.
Must be able to work additional hours as needed to support production and complete projects.
This position classification has been defined as exempt and is not subject to overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).
