The Instructional Designer (ID) will work with the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning on the Digital Learning Initiative, a grant-funded project focused on online learning. The position is funded for two years with the possibility of renewal.
The ID will manage the design, development, implementation, and evaluation of a portfolio of online courses, closely collaborating with faculty subject matter experts and instructors throughout the course life cycle. Courses will be in a range of disciplines that are part of the new Online Adult Baccalaureate Degree Completion Program and other programs on campus as needed.
In addition, the ID may develop content for online faculty and student training modules on online teaching and learning, and design and lead technology-training sessions for faculty and students on the learning management system and other technology platforms.
The ideal candidate will possess strong collaboration and team-building skills, diplomacy, persistence, flexibility, and the ability to remain focused in a deadline-driven environment.
1. Develop collegial and productive collaborative relationships with faculty subject matter experts and instructional teams. 2. Create standard course roadmaps and timelines and work with faculty to ensure that goals and milestones are achieved on schedule. 3. In collaboration with faculty SME, design, select, and test technologies, materials, activities, and assessments that are aligned with course learning outcomes, pedagogical approach, and course content. 4. Using standard course template and Quality Matters rubric as a starting point, design course structure and information architecture for optimal alignment with learning outcomes. 5. Train faculty on course development and delivery tools including video lecture capture, collaboration tools, and learning management system. 6. Design course look and feel and assist faculty with video editing and media assets creation as necessary. 7. Ensure course meets accessibility standards including HTML tags, captions, visual design, and document formats. 8. Assist instructional team during course delivery phase with technology and pedagogy questions and issues. Ensure that course runs smoothly throughout the deployment period. 9. Gather data and analytics from technology platforms, student surveys, artifacts produced in course, and other relevant data to evaluate student learning. 10. Make recommendations based on data for course revisions and assist faculty with revisions as needed. 11. Design and deliver training sessions on LMS and other technology tools for general faculty population. 12. Design and develop online learning strategies modules for online students and instructors. 13. Assist faculty with preparing for Quality Matters course reviews. 14. Other duties as assigned.
Education Master's or PhD in Instructional Design, Education, Library and Information Science, Digital Multimedia Design or related discipline. Candidates with an advanced degree in an academic disciplinecombined with strong experience or training in instructional design will be considered.
At least two years of experience in online course design and development gained as an instructional designer, instructional technologist, trainer, instructional librarian or related position.
Strong knowledge of adult learning theory, experience with Blackboard and/or Canvas
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Digital multimedia fluency (including digital image manipulation, video/audio editing, HTML, presentation software, various ed-tech platforms). Portfolio of course design examples required.
Preferred Experience with ADDIE or Agile design models and Quality Matters rubric; online teaching experience in higher education; experience providing technology training for faculty.
