The Center for Technology in Education in the School of Education at Johns Hopkins University seeks a dynamic individual to fill the role of Visual Designer. This casual/on call position requires a detail-oriented person with high technical abilities, good communications skills, and knowledge and experience with executing design plans. This individual will have the unique opportunity to create cutting-edge visual concepts, artwork, and layouts utilizing digital computer software to communicate ideas that engage, inspire, inform, and captivate users (internal and external). Reporting to the Senior Program Director for Learning, Engagement, and Design, this position will develop the overall layout and production design for various applications such as graphics, websites, marketing materials, presentations and internal / external events.
Specific duties & responsibilities:
Conceptualize engaging and illustrative info-graphics for training sites, presentations, brochures and reports.
Design various website elements, including: attractive banners, splash images, prominent buttons, menus, and icons.
Source images (stock photos and video footage)
Design various marketing materials for center projects and programs, including: flyers, brochures, promotional items, booklets, conference handouts, signage, and posters.
Create email marketing items, presentation materials and interactive event materials
Create vibrant, informative and engaging presentations for various audiences.
Review materials created by others for standards and brand alignment.
Collaborate with the Learning, Engagement, and Design team on design needs.
Visualize and design event layouts for a welcoming and engaging user experience for events.
Resize assets for different devices — tablet, mobile and web
Work with a component library
Juggle multiple projects simultaneously while effectively managing timelines and expectations
Minimum qualifications (mandatory):
Bachelor’s Degree in Graphic Design, Fine Arts Education or related field
2 years of experience
Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:
A solid foundation in typography, layout and design
Strong problem-solving skills
Experience with transitions and dynamic interaction
Excellent visual, written and verbal communication skills, along with presentation and negotiation skills
A penchant for details and organization, including the ability to prioritize tasks, communicate progress and meet deadlines
The ability to effectively take direction and work both collaboratively and autonomously
Adobe Creative Suite, particularly InDesign, Photoshop and Illustrator
Understanding of web design issues, including browser usability and cross-platform compatibility
Strong design and troubleshooting skills, as well as an eye for detail
