The Library, Information, and Technology Services (LITS) Division at Mount Holyoke College is committed to providing integrated information and technology services and resources that enable students, faculty, and staff to creatively and productively advance the College’s academic, administrative, and co-curricular goals.
Reporting to the Head of Web Services & Application Development, the Web & Application Interface Developer is responsible for developing, designing, enhancing, programming, integrating, testing, troubleshooting, debugging, implementing, supporting, and maintaining software applications on multiple platforms, ensuring a consistent high quality user experience and standards compliance. Working in a team-based environment, this position collaborates with individuals and departments within LITS and throughout the College in achieving their goals.
This position is a member of the Technology Infrastructure and Systems Support (TISS) Group, which focuses on providing the technology base and its accompanying framework for the electronic resources and services that support the college. Operations within the TISS Group include: data center operations, networking, web application support, business intelligence, and administrative computing.

Essential Job Functions
Development and Design Responsible for designing, implementing, programming, assessing, enhancing, integrating, testing, troubleshooting, debugging, and maintaining web based applications on multiple platforms using current, adopted web application tools; ensuring a high quality interactive user experience and visual design and brand consistency; analyzing customer needs in order to design and implement technical solutions in line with department and college goals; designing efficient and effective solutions according to development best practices; supporting hosted and existing legacy systems.
Web Application and System Support Supports the College’s web applications, directly and through technical assistance to LITS staff and other College personnel. Maintains a high level of quality customer service standards in dealing with and responding to questions and problems.
Professional Development Keep abreast of new trends, tools, opportunities, and campus needs by seeking and engaging with resources to develop and maintain understanding of standards, best practices, and methodologies around management, development, maintenance, and support of modern web systems. Participate in a continuous process of assessment to ensure the team’s success in advancing the College’s evolving goals in light of pedagogical, information, and technology changes.
Leverages knowledge, experience, and collaborative partnerships within LITS and various communities of practice to assist in proactively identifying, recommending, planning, and facilitating relevant practices, tools, policies, services, resources, support, and procedures that improve the ability of the College community to accomplish its teaching, learning, research, and administrative goals, including contribution to and participation in digital governance and oversight processes.
Ensures compliance with College brand and visual design policies in support of customer goals.
Ensures compliance with professional and technology standards, license and regulatory requirements, accessibility standards and practices, and other College standards, policies, and procedures.
Contributes as a member of project teams, working groups, and other LITS and College committees to plan and achieve TISS, LITS, and College goals and priorities.
Provides user experience support to LITS and Five College library colleagues.
Actively works with colleagues in LITS, as well as College and external committees, to foster a robust campus community and create a welcoming and user-centered environment in which a diverse population of students, faculty, and staff can thrive.
Mentors and trains team members and other College staff in interface design, web design, user experience design, and evaluating and using appropriate web and related technologies.
Participates in external organizations, communities of practice, and other professional activities related to the duties of the position, including the College, Five Colleges, and larger higher ed communities, as well as those around web, user experience, interaction design, programming and development tools, processes, and specific products.
Evening and weekend work, as necessary. In some circumstances, it may be important to assist during adverse weather and emergency situations to ensure essential services and service points are covered.
Performs related duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent work experience.
At least three years of progressively responsible technical experience with web application or interaction design, development, and support. Experience on various server platforms utilizing W3C and related standards and familiarity with complex systems required.
Web design and design implementation experience.
Understanding of core web application concepts, including utilizing web standards for accessibility, user interface design, information design and application systems architecture. Further familiarity with industry best practices, such as content strategy, responsive design, and various web services models, including cloud technologies.
Familiarity with project management methodologies, especially Agile/Scrum.

Experience with one or more of Drupal, WordPress, SharePoint, or Rails.
Experience with one or more of PHP, Ruby, Python, Perl.
Experience with modern tools and practices such as Git/GitHub, containerized and virtualized local development, automated testing, and continuous integration and deployment.
Web analytics and assessment experience.
Experience in mentoring.
Flexibility to accept, manage, and incorporate change and the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities simultaneously and effectively in a fast-paced environment.
Ability to travel as needed to participate in consortia and professional meetings and events.
Enthusiastic service orientation with sensitivity to the needs of users at all skill levels; the ability to convey technical information to a non-technical audience is essential.
Familiarity with user experience and user research methodologies and disciplines.
