The UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism invites applications for part-time, non-tenure track, lecturer positions to teach in our new Undergraduate Minor Program in Summer Sessions 2018 and in academic year graduate courses in the 2018-2019 school year.
If you viewed an announcement about a lecturer needs for a specific course, this is the correct place to apply. This is our generic lecturer pool recruitment which we draw from for all new lecturer hires for the 2018-2019 academic year.
For Summer 2018, one position is available as head instructor for J100 Introduction to News Writing. Lecturer in Summer Sessions appointments will be made for one six-week term from May 21, 2018 through June 29, 2018 with the possibility of a second term from July 2, 2017 through August 10, 2018.
Review for fall semester 2018 teaching needs will begin in April, 2018. Review for spring semester 2019 teaching needs will begin August, 2018. Applications will continue to be accepted and reviewed through March 29, 2019. If you wish to remain in the pool after March 29, 2019, you will need to reapply.
The number of available academic year positions varies from semester to semester, depending upon the needs of the School. Positions typically start at the beginning of the semester, and appointments may be renewable based on need, funding, and performance.
In 2018/2019, the School anticipates hiring needs in the following platform areas:
New Media and the construction of online news packages and websites o Seeking two positions to advise graduate student master's projects. The successful candidates would co-teach J216 New Media Master's Project Workshop and use the course to facilitate the selection of stories, guide the reporting process, and oversee the construction of online new packages. Preferred skills include website construction, audio/visual forms of journalism, strong sense of visual design, and keen news judgement.
Visual Journalism/Video o Seeking one position to train students in producing video content guided by standards of professional reporting. The successful candidate would teach J282 Introduction to Visual Journalism
Audio/Podcasting o Seeking one position to train students in producing podcasts and narrative radio, guided by standards of professional reporting. The successful candidate would teach J212 Advanced Audio: Podcasting.
Reporting o Seeking one position to train students in standards and techniques of professional reporting. The successful candidate would teach a section of J200 Reporting the News, the School's core first semester course.

General Duties: In addition to teaching responsibilities, general duties include holding office hours, assigning grades, advising students, preparing course materials (e.g., syllabus), and maintaining a course website.
Basic Qualifications: Applicants must have either a Bachelor's, or equivalent degree, in a related field or ten years of professional journalistic experience at the time of application.
Additional Qualifications: Prior professional experience teaching or similar experience in providing and developing lesson plans or trainings by start date.
Preferred Qualifications: Prior experience mentoring teaching assistants. Prior experience teaching at the level (undergraduate/graduate) for which the candidate is applying, and/or a demonstrated record of significant professional achievement.
Salary: The salary for this position is commensurate with teaching and professional experience.
