Visual Media Designer - Center for New Designs in Learning and Scholarship (CNDLS)
The Center for New Designs in Learning and Scholarship (CNDLS) is the center for teaching excellence and innovation at Georgetown University. CNDLS staff members, in addition to faculty and graduate affiliates, are engaged in advanced research on teaching practices, assessment techniques, instructional and learning design, media development, and technologies to enhance student learning. Whether rethinking course design, assessing curricula, or creating a dynamic digital archive, CNDLS works to align teaching practices with student engagement and learning. CNDLS is an integral part of Georgetown's efforts to rethink the Future(s) of Higher Education and the Center has recently developed Georgetown's new Program in Learning, Design and Technology , a program at the cutting edge of the future of innovations in teaching and learning in higher education.
CNDLS seeks a Visual Media Designer to design visual content for print and web in collaboration with various CNDLS teams. The duties of this position include but are not limited to the development and production of visual designs for CNDLS' programs and communications, with a focus on graphic artwork, layout designs, and branding elements to be used in Georgetown online courses. He or she will ask probing questions to understand a project's ethos, prepare multiple concepts for feedback, pitch designs and articulate reasons for design decisions, respond iteratively and thoughtfully to feedback, and work closely with web development, media production, and learning design colleagues. The Visual Media Designer should bring to the table a commitment to active listening, a tactful interpersonal style, and the ability to respectfully and persuasively argue for best practices in design. The Visual Media Designer may occasionally assist the Media team in camera and lighting setup, camera operation, and post-production processes. Duties include but are not limited to:
Digital Graphic Design & Illustration Iteration
Participate in initial project conversations, gathering design criteria and capturing a sense of the project vision and ethos for design work.
Formulate concepts and execute layout designs for artwork and copy to be presented by visual communications media (print, web, media, packaging, LMS, and website).
Conceptualize and prepare multiple concepts for early-stage design assets, such as branding packages and web comps.
Design content for online and e-learning modules.
Iterate on design comps based on feedback and professional judgment.
Design and produce email templates for CNDLS and programs as needed.
Design and produce newsletter templates for CNDLS and programs as needed.
Project Management and Liaising
Pitch and articulate reasons for design decisions and listen actively to feedback from teammates and clients.
Review illustrative material and confer with CNDLS staff, clients (faculty) or individual responsible for presentation regarding styles, techniques, and related production factors.
Liaise with external vendors (mostly printers) to assess project feasibility, timelines and execution.
Guide faculty/team members through decisions that need to be made around visual design; collaborate closely.
Keep abreast of latest trends in, and best practices for, visual design.
Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design, Film/Media Production or related field
At least 3 years of experience in graphic design or similar design sub-domain
A portfolio showcasing work across different forms of media and graphics design
Demonstrated knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite including graphic creation and manipulation
Must be proficient in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator; proficiency in Premiere a plus
Ability to display a keen eye for cutting-edge imagery, layout, typography, color, and a solid understanding of visual communication
Ability to multi-task across multiple projects and clients in a fast-paced and team-oriented environment
Experience shooting with DSLR cameras in a variety of settings and styles is a plus
Superb organizational skills particularly in regard to file management and media formats.
Ability to work well on one's own and in a team environment under strict deadlines
