The Communications Department is currently searching for a Graphic Designer to join their team. This is a full-time, non-exempt position, and is eligible for benefits.
The Creative Studio at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is seeking a Graphic Designer with experience in electronic and print media, with a focus on digital design. We're looking for someone who can take direction from written or spoken ideas and convert them seamlessly into images, layouts, and other designs. The successful candidate should have an intimate understanding of how to visually communicate science, and how marketing campaigns work, especially in the nonprofit realm, to support our clients. We work in a fast-paced environment, so the ideal Graphic Designer will be able to hit the ground running as soon as we bring on new projects. Applicants who have experience with scientific or nonprofit institutions will be given prime consideration.
Carries out a wide range of complex duties utilizing a versatile skill set to design, create, and package a wide array of multimedia to communicate complex scientific concepts
Digital design, including information architecture, wireframing, user experience design for both web and interactives, social media graphics and banners, static and rich banner ads, and email campaigns
Multimedia design: Creates effective graphics for presentations, displays, and exhibits
Print design: Prepares sketches and layouts to illustrate vision for design; selects colors, photography, typography, and other visual elements for the design
Prepares specifications and purchase orders for outside services such as printers, solicits bids for services, and follows jobs through to delivery
Works closely with the Creative Director and other graphic & visual designers to facilitate the distillation of complex scientific concepts into intuitive graphics and visual explanations
Contributes to other projects within Communications as required
Writing/editing skills a plus
As deemed necessary by supervisor
REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
The Graphic Designer must have both a demonstrated artistic/creative ability and a superior knowledge of graphic design and information visualization principles with continuing knowledge of innovations and trends within those fields.
Additionally, the candidate must have:
Bachelor's Degree in Graphic Design, Marketing or related discipline with 4+ years in professional design, preferably with a marketing or creative agency.
Extensive experience with Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign, specifically with mockups, web and email design, and multimedia presentations
Should be tech savvy, familiar with the Mac/Adobe Creative Suite environment, as well as traditional graphic arts tools and equipment.
Ability to absorb and apply constructive criticism from peers and clients
Adaptive design eye and skill
Excellent communication skills
Physical duties for this position include visual abilities to include, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to distinguish basic colors. Hearing requirements include the ability to hear and respond to instructions. Other physical tasks include mostly sedentary, working around others, alone and with others. Physical duties are subject to change.
