As a contract technical editor, you will provide technical editing and writing on a primary project: procurement documents for a large public-sector client. Additional work may include editing other technical content, including reports, proposals, and research papers, as well as marketing communications. Guided by project writing guidelines and in-house style and brand guidelines, you will edit for consistency, clarity, and accuracy, with a sharp understanding of grammar and style.
The target start date is as soon as possible, and the approximate duration of the assignment is 3 months, which may be extended.
Working closely with the communications manager and technical staff, you will adapt your editorial review to diverse clients, content, and timelines. The ideal candidate is an organized professional able to apply self-initiative, a positive team attitude, technical aptitude, and creativity in working with our designers, planners, engineers, consultants, and technical specialists to produce high-quality client deliverables and proposals. The successful candidate will be committed to editorial excellence and able to communicate professionally across diverse groups of technical professionals. Strong verbal and written communication skills are essential to success in this role.
2+ years of professional experience editing technical content or copyediting complex nonfiction/journalism
Bachelor’s degree in English, communications, or related field
Editing or technical communications certificate or CPTC certification preferred
Skills and Experience
Strong technical editing skills, including excellent writing and grammar
Ability to edit for accuracy, brevity, clarity, and consistency in accordance with relevant style guide standards
Excellent knowledge and understanding of Chicago Manual of Style, as well as the ability to switch gears and edit to other style standards, including AP style and UK English spellings/standards
Proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite and advanced proficiency with Microsoft Word (section breaks, cross-references, styles, etc.)
Proficiency with Adobe programs, particularly InDesign
Bonus points (preferred but not required): experience with Trello, InCopy, and Word macros
