The Senior Medical and Scientific Animator/Illustrator will be responsible for accurately communicating complex medical and scientific concepts to multiple audiences in a highly interactive and engaging format. Under the direction of the Director of Creative Media and working with other members of the HMX Online Learning team, you will bring world-class visual design sensibilities and expertise in information organization, visual communication, and storytelling to produce a broad range of visual media including biomedical illustration, 2D animation, interactive educational media, and graphic design. You will ensure HMX brand consistency and graphic identity across all work (course components and marketing materials), delivering an array of best-in-class visual products in multiple modalities.

HMX description HMX is an educational initiative at Harvard Medical School dedicated to creating fully online courses on foundational topics in medicine. These courses are led by Harvard Medical School faculty, working in collaboration with a multi-disciplinary team of experts in visual communication, assessment, and the science of learning. The instruction is based on principles derived from educational research to improve learning and retention and relies on best practices in scientific visualization.
Design and produce illustrations, 2D animations, and graphics to accurately and effectively communicate medical and scientific concepts, including researching content, editing scripts, storyboarding, and creating prototypes/mockups as needed
Collaborate with the HMX team including the UI/UX Designer, Director of Creative Media, HMX Faculty Director and other faculty to develop engaging educational interactives
Mentor junior colleagues by providing feedback on technical and pedagogical approaches to the creation of visual media, the application of best practices in the field, and the implementation of HMX standards
Design and produce social media and collateral materials for HMX marketing purposes. Conceptualize new marketing materials, especially in social media
Establish and document processes and procedures for the production of visual materials, in collaboration with the rest of the creative media team
Make recommendations for tools and approaches to enhance the educational value of creative course materials and/or improve efficiency of our course production process
Manage vendor communication and timelines for medical illustration/animation projects.
Collaborate with video experts on the creative media team to direct the filming of direct-to-camera and narrative components of medical illustration/animation projects

Bachelor's degree plus five years of experience producing high-quality biomedical visualizations, including digital formats for online or mobile device delivery. An advanced specialized degree may count toward the experience.
