California PATH is a research center within the Institute of Transportation Studies at UC Berkeley. PATH's focus is the development of automation systems for vehicles and highways that will improve traveler safety, reduce traffic congestion and reduce vehicle emissions. PATH conducts extramural research, that is, all of our projects are sponsored by agencies outside of the University. PATH employs as many as 140 staff, researchers and graduate students on 60 or so projects. Most projects have a year duration, but large complex projects can last 3 years. Each project produces a final report and content from the report is used to produce a variety of short documents targeting executive audiences. These may be published either on paper, PDF or on the web. Federally funded project typically require the development of a comprehensive proposal, under specific deadlines and document organizational constraints.
The incumbent for this role writes or edits a variety of comprehensive and difficult material for stylistic consistency, logic, organization, rational development of content, and emphasis. The individual works in a team oriented environment with academic researchers - constructing proposal submissions, quarterly and final reports as well as programmatic publications (annual reports, etc). The person recommends content and layout, edits, and coordinates production of a variety of printed and online material, or conversion of printed pieces to online formats and archives.
30% Under limited supervision, researches, writes and / or edits material for a variety of publications for external audiences. Working with a technical project team (or lead), compose documentation that targets a general management audience, in the transportation industry. These documents tend to be brief and summarize the progress and promise of a course of research. Additionally the technical writer will support a technical team in the development of different research products. This can include task reports, white papers, quarterly reports and the final report. These documents tell an in-depth story of the research project, including theories, prior art, mathematics, research methods and collected data , its analysis and as well as conclusions and recommendations. These documents target a technical audience.
30% As an editor, ensures clarity, organization, accuracy, style, and quality of written work. All of our proposals and research projects are composed by teams. In each of these documents, individual chapters are typically composed by different authors. As a result, each chapter can display different organization, a different writing style and quality of written work. It is the task of the technical writer to correct all deficiencies and create a professional document that reads smoothly throughout. It is also important that the technical writer maintain a positive working relationship with the technical team - efforts to improve work product should not be delivered in a manner that can be interpreted personally.
20% Assignments may include analytical, interpretive or promotional / persuasive projects. In addition to research products, the technical writer will be responsible for developing short persuasive documents that promote projects for a variety of reasons, including webinars. Such documents would be brief, under 2 pages. Assignments may also include longer persuasive documents, such as an annual report, that promote the program. Annual reports require a professional layout, typically enabled by desktop publishing programs.
20% Produces articles, profiles, blogs, collateral, and /or other written material using subject matter expertise. The technical writer is also responsible for maintaining web pages that explain the long term development strategies for different technical areas. These pieces generally take a 5 to 10 year view of development requirements and include commentary on how current projects contribute towards the fulfillment of this vision.
