The Medical College Admission Test® (MCAT®) is a standardized, multiple-choice, computer-based test that has been a part of the medical school admissions process for more than 90 years. Each year, more than 85,000 students sit for the exam. The MCAT exam tests examinees on the skills and knowledge that medical educators, physicians, medical students, and residents have identified as key prerequisites for success in medical school and practicing medicine.
The MCAT team is looking for an experienced technical writer with excellent project management skills to join the MCAT research team. This role will coordinate the publication of psychometric and validity research in peer-reviewed journals as well as the development, dissemination, and maintenance of resources and tools for medical school admissions officers. The ability to translate highly technical research into usable information for all audiences, including admissions officers, prehealth advisors, and students, will be crucial in this role.
How will you make an impact?
Coordinate content development of organization’s publications (books, journals, articles, or magazines) including composition, design, and graphics
Implement and supervise progress of critical initiatives, organizational goals and policies
Develop a roadmap for the development of resources with input from MCAT senior leaders and researchers
Conduct literature reviews on admissions and testing-related subjects
Synthesize findings from quantitative and qualitative data about admissions officers' and their committees' questions and challenges in using MCAT scores in medical student selection
Translate research results into accessible, engaging, and relevant text; design tables, charts, and other graphics that highlight or summarize important concepts in visually appealing and informative ways
Develop resources (e.g., users' guides, tip sheets) for admissions officers that address the following concepts: Group differences on the MCAT exam in relation to other standardized tests, Predictive validity results, balanced use of MCAT scores in holistic admissions, why pass/fail scoring won't advance diversity goals, and how graduation rates and Step exam passing rates by MCAT and GPA ranges suggest that students with a wide range of scores succeed
Develop publication plans for the creation of manuscripts, reports, guides, and other resources, in collaboration with senior MCAT researchers
Write, review, and copyedit manuscripts, white papers, committee reports, and other scientific/technical documentation related to MCAT psychometrics and validity research
Design examinee-focused resources that describe information on the testing calendar, the meaning of scores and percentile ranks, changes in scores for those who test more than once; research on the cognitive, procedural, and affective strategies that help examinees perform well on the MCAT exam and that highlight AAMC resources for planning, learning, diagnosing, and practicing for the exam; Resources and strategies that help students at underresourced institutions learn about and prepare for the exam?
Establish and manage relationships with medical school admissions officers, student groups and other partners to learn about their information needs and keep communication channels active and open
Attend AAMC events and conferences to learn about partners' issues and look for ways to improve presentations by MCAT staff and committee members
What will you bring to the role?
Bachelors degree required but Master's degree preferred; certificate or Master's in Science Writing a plus
8 years of related work experience, 1 - 3 years of supervisory experience
Experience writing about social science or educational research preferred
Ability to write for both technical and nontechnical audiences
If a bachelor’s degree is required, related work experience may be substituted in some positions. One year of college course work at an accredited institution is equivalent to one year of related work experience.
