This role will support the Systems R&D Team user research, usability design, concept design and product development. It will be a mix of product, UX and UI design (75%), Design/ user research (25%).
While working with a team of product designers the student co-op will be expected to engage on some of the following types of activities:
Plan and execute user research, including creating research material, conducting user interviews, and synthesizing data
Paper-based and hands-on prototyping (low-fidelity) and digital prototyping / interactive mock-ups.
Create design concepts (wireframes, mockups, prototypes, etc.) based on user research insights
Conduct research to test and validate design concepts
Produce varying fidelity of designs as needed to flesh out design intent and direction
Create design specifications and all necessary documents detailing look and feel and workflow for hand-off to developers
Create presentations to share research insights and communicate design direction
Participate in design reviews
Understand and follow proper procedures and best practices; work with senior designers to improve them.
Contribute to project planning and commit to deliverable goals. Proactively report progress to project management and R&D management when required.
Take direction as needed from senior designers and R&D managers; complete most tasks with minimal guidance; use resources responsibly and effectively.
Proactively seek out senior leaders and managers as necessary.
As a co-op you will have the chance to :
Conceptualize original ideas that bring simplicity and user friendliness to complex medical device design challenges
Create wireframes, storyboards, user flows, process flows and site maps to effectively communicate interaction and design ideas
Develop UI mockups and prototypes that clearly illustrate how the design functions and looks like
Present and defend designs and key milestone deliverables to R&D team-mates and managers
Conduct user research and evaluate user feedback
Establish and promote design guidelines, best practices and standards
Sedentary work: Exerting up to 10 kilograms of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently to lift, carry, etc. generally involves sitting most of the time.
Must be able to communicate with groups of people.
Must be able to review printed materials.
Ability to use common office equipment.
Self-managed, self-motivated, with excellent hands-on problem-solving skills.
Must be able to generate and explain design objectives.
Must be able to complete detailed documentation accurately. Astute attention to detail.
Must demonstrate creative thinking and paper-based problem-solving ability.
Must be able to review and troubleshoot designs and provide constructive feedback.

A student portfolio showing product design, UX and UI design experiences (H/W Digital and Product interfaces preferred)
Experience in creating wireframes, storyboards, user flows, and prototyping (for products NOT Web pages)
Excellent visual design skills with sensitivity to human-centered design
Ability to present your designs and solutions
Ability to solve problems creatively and effectively
Comfortable on paper or with digital design tools (Adobe creative suite, Axure, sketch, etc.), and technologies
A positive attitude, creative spirit, customer-focused driven, and the ability to give and receive creative feedback
Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and establish (and re-establish) priorities.
Enrolled and in their 3rd or 4th year in a Human Computer Interaction, Interactive Design, User experience or User Interface Design (or similar) program.
