The Office of Communications and Marketing at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville is currently seeking an Art Director to join the Creative Communications team. Our team manages the university's visual brand identity and editorial guidelines. We develop creative strategy and produce design work in support of high-impact institutional priorities, and provide resources, tools, and guidance to support design needs across campus.

The Office of Communications and Marketing is dedicated to advancing the university's reputation. Staff members support the institution's mission and goals, promote its successes and achievements, inform and engage its stakeholders, and ensure the integrity of its brand. We craft audience-focused communications based on data, best-practices, and emerging trends. The division employs more than 50 full-time professionals across several cross-functional teams--Creative, Digital, Marketing, News, Special Events, Video, and WUOT 91.9FM.
Works under the guidance of the Creative Director & Assistant Director to ensure visual designs reflect the university's mission, vision, values and work within the established brand guidelines
Helps to inform creative direction and visual tone of materials
Serves as art director and lead designer for assigned print, digital, and multimedia projects
Participates in brainstorming and ideation sessions, working collaboratively with other stakeholders
Makes design format decisions that work within project budgets and align with marketing plans
Arranges and directs photoshoots
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Deep understanding of all facets of design, able to execute strong visual design and typographic solutions across print, digital, and video-based creative
Strong communication and leadership skills and the ability to work fluidly with stakeholders from different disciplines
Synthesizes complex information into simple design solutions
Expert-level skills with industry standard design software
Advanced knowledge of printing processes and techniques
Advanced knowledge of best practices in print and digital communication
Proven written and verbal communication skills
Ability to plan ahead and develop creative strategies
Ability to manage and deliver multiple projects at once, shifting from project to project as needed, working and thinking proactively, and prioritizing tasks appropriately
Ability to present concepts, designs, and/or rationale to clients or team members in a clear, confident manner
