We are seeking a Senior Medical Writer and Editor who is responsible for providing a technical review of work of other contributors to ensure final product meets quality standards. This person develops and implement projects and ideas for disseminating news and generating communications materials for appropriate audiences regarding technical/scientific area of health care delivery and improvement in patient safety, quality, equity, value and patient experience and patient centeredness.
The Sr. Technical Writer and Editor analyzes researched information for quality and relevance to subject matter, interprets and incorporates information into manuscripts, as appropriate. This person also decides on topics and themes for publication (alone or in collaboration with others), offers input to publication design, and provides writing oversight and editing of other contributors.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
- Independently write the first draft of manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals (describing original research or offering a viewpoint), grant sections, reports, and other documents.
- Revise manuscripts (original research, viewpoints, systematic reviews, book chapters) and grants for important intellectual content, smooth expression and correct grammar.
- Conduct literature reviews and summarize information for manuscripts, grant proposals, and grant reports.
- Copy-edit and proofread manuscripts, grant proposals, reports, and other documents.
- Perform basic qualitative data analysis and interpretation of both qualitative and quantitative results.
- Independently draft responses to peer reviewer comments and revisions to manuscript for authors (with collaboration on scientific points).
- Independently review and correct article proofs for accuracy before publication; liaise with journal editors.
- Coordinate Armstrong Institute column for Quality Management in Health Care journal: work with editor to recommend content, edit content, and support submission by authors.
- Research and recommend appropriate journals for manuscripts.
- Write annotated bibliographies for AI publications.
- Submit manuscripts and any associated materials to the target journal.
Teaching Across Johns Hopkins Medicine
- Present or conduct workshops on organizing and writing a manuscript reporting quality improvement, patient safety, or clinical research.
- 2-hour curriculum includes a presentation and critiquing of abstracts (annually for Armstrong Institute Leadership Academy fellows)
- Annually to targeted training programs: e.g., Analytic Leadership in Patient Safety Fellowship Program; Surgical Faculty-MPH Student Mentoring Program for The Center for Surgical Trials and Outcomes Research
- Other: Johns Hopkins Clinical Community leads; Department of Medicine residents, patient safety & quality improvement track
- Provide one-on-one assessment of manuscripts for Armstrong Institute members: planning of content, reorganization of content in appropriate sections, assess completeness of study methods description, check accuracy of descriptive data, recommend new information or other references, and check formatting to meet journal style.
Management Responsibilities
- Editor, AI Achieves Newsletter for Armstrong Institute.
- Gather and determine appropriateness of information, write or edit content, produce layout and distribute electronic newsletter
- Manage and report Armstrong Institute publication metrics for strategic planning and research program goals assessment.
- Member, Research Facilitation Council. The council focuses on assessing priorities to build capacity to support research, developing and organizing the research infrastructure, integrating research with operations, and supporting data management.
- Connect Armstrong Institute research efforts to medical society, AcademyHealth, and other professional society members: solicit and submit content to AcademyHealth ePartners newsletter
- Lead various internal efforts to build writing and scholarship capacity
- Coordinate Writing Accountability Groups (small groups of faculty and other researchers to encourage consistent writing progress)
- Coordinate the Paper Partnerships (collaborations between operations and research staff and faculty)
- Planning Committee member, Johns Hopkins Medicine Patient Safety Summit.
- Subcommittee lead for table displays
- Abstract reviewer
- Member, Publications Committee for various projects, as time permits.
- Advisor on manuscript publication and reporting guidelines, authorship criteria and responsibilities
- Participate in grant proposal collaboration and development.
Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
- Master's Degree in Public Health/Health Sciences/Health Policy/or other related field required.
- Must possess an in-depth knowledge of the subject matter of health care delivery and improvement in patient safety, quality, equity, value and patient centeredness.
- One (1) year of related experience.
- Writing samples will be required.

Preferred Qualifications:
- Degree/certificate in technical writing at the undergraduate or graduate levels.
- Examples of certificates might be in Technical Writing (such as Technical Writer HQ; Certified Professional Technical Communicator or American Medical Writer's Association certification).

- Expertise in building literature search strategies.
- Awareness of systematic review methods.
Physical Requirements:
- Sitting in normal seated position for extended periods of time.
- Ability to use a keyboard and move about.
- Ability to see and hear within normal parameters.
