Position Summary
Position Purpose: The Graphic & Visual Designer (GVD) is responsible for the development, creation, and production of various print- and web-based designed pieces/suites/collateral to preserve, complement, and/or enhance the institutions overall visual identity, graphics suite, and brand standards across media, channels, and audiences. The GVD is an instrumental member of the COMMs team in supporting SHS messaging, sustaining and growing internal/external engagement, and helping meet both revenue and recruitment objectives and overarching institutional goals.
Essential Duties:
- Collaborates with the Director of Strategic Communications as the principal graphic designer for select institutional, high-level publications, brochures, reports, programs, invitations, etc. with duties including but not limited to creating, launching digital/web-based companion editions and overseeing all print projects fully through execution.
- Serves as primary designer/design consultant for the prioritized departments of Admissions, Advancement, Office of Mission, Culture, Strategy, IT/Web, on the refresh or development of any new designed pieces, cohesive graphic suites, various collateral, etc. for both print and digital platforms.
- Works with a broad array of senior administration, divisional and program leaders, as well as key parent volunteers to brainstorm, conceptualize, design, and produce an array of single-use, ongoing, or campaign visuals that support the overall institutional brand, values, and messages, and advance each projects overarching goals/objectives.
- Collaborates with the COMMs team and the internal Integrated Marketing Committee to develop and implement a process for seeking and securing design assistance, prioritizing projects and timelines.
- Develops and maintains a series of design/layout templates for use across the organization and types of need.
- Regularly conducts a thorough audit of current-use designed collateral, maintains design files and samples, and regularly updates a working design archive for reference and historic purposes.
- Identifies and maintains roster of preferred print vendors/providers, and helps facilitate budgeting, estimates, and selection process for internal clients.
- Responsible for administering annual institutional stationery order (business cards, letterhead, etc.).
- Commitment to continuing professional development including but not limited to new design techniques, software, and platforms as directed.
Other Important Responsibilities:
- Provide support for high-profile activities and events of the COMMS and Advancement teams (e.g., Auction, Alumni events, other).
- Attend, present, or participate in senior leadership meetings, internal committees, Trustee Engagement Committee meetings, Parent Association meetings, etc., as needed.
- Share guidance/support as needed/requested to colleagues and students in areas of visual storytelling mediums, brand standards/compliance, and best practices in visual design.
- Other duties as assigned by the Director of Communications or Associate Director of Communications & PR.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelors degree (related field preferred, i.e., Graphic or Visual Design, English, Communications, Public Relations, Marketing)
- 4-7 years of professional experience in graphic and visual design that supports branding and messaging, with a strong portfolio of compelling, published work for print, website, social media, and other channels.
- Must have experience designing/creating infographics for use in digital and print platforms.
- Well-versed in foundational principles of graphic and visual design, and seasoned in all aspects of design production for print and web, including ideation/conceptualization, illustration, layout, design boards, typography, color, use of imagery, etc.
- Demonstrated expertise with creative design software, in particular Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Animate, Character Animate, Fresco, etc.).
- Experience creating illustration/motion graphics/animation production highly desirable as is familiarity/some experience with camera equipment, platforms, and photo editing/processing.
- Must be comfortable and successful working both independently and as part of a team.
- Established track record of achieving goals on-time and on-budget.
- Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills, with a proven ability to manage multiple projects and consistently produce quality work in deadline-driven environment. Demonstrated outstanding organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to keep to a plan and pivot as needed.
- Compelling ability to communicate effectively with all people within and those associated with the SHS community while committed to delivering excellent customer service.
- Proven ability to lead creative strategy meetings and present information to a variety of audiences.
- Excellent attention to detail, service-oriented and open to feedback and collaboration throughout the design process. Willing to seek, receive, process, discuss, and apply feedback from colleagues and clients.
- Experience in educational or nonprofit industry not required, but desired.
- A clear commitment to the educational philosophy of the school as articulated in the Goals and Criteria of Sacred Heart Schools.
Physical Demands and Work Environment:
- Works in a fast-paced environment dealing with a wide variety of challenges, deadlines and a varied and diverse array of contacts.
- Must comply with all state vaccination requirements and show proof of vaccination including but not limited to COVID-19 or proof of eligibility for exemption.
- May work at a desk and computer for extended periods of time (up to 10 hours or more per day).
- Speak and hear to communicate effectively with school population and the public.
- Must be able to regularly move safely and comfortably over a 64 acre campus.
- Be able to regularly lift up to 10lbs. and on occasion, safely lift up to 30 lbs.
- Work primarily in a traditional climate controlled office environment and outside in weather ranging from cold and wet to very warm (80+ degrees) during special activities and fundraising events.
- Available and willing to work evenings and some weekends, on occasion.
