The Medical and Scientific Animator/Illustrator for the Office for External Education's (OEE) Product Development group contributes to a growing portfolio of educational products and programs designed for OEE's target markets of corporate learners, health care professionals, and the general public. The Medical and Scientific Animator/Illustrator will bring world-class visual design sensibilities and expertise in information organization, visual communication, and storytelling to produce a broad range of visual media including biomedical illustration, 2D animation, interactive educational media, graphic design, and other emerging modalities while ensuring brand consistency and graphic identity across all work. This position reports to the Associate Director, Biomedical Visualization within the highly collaborative and cross-disciplinary Product Development Team.
The Medical and Scientific Animator/Illustrator should feel comfortable working closely with world-class faculty, instructional designers and curriculum experts, video production professionals, developers, and other constituencies and be experienced in researching complex scientific topics, asking concise questions, and synthesizing feedback. They should be energized by working in a highly collaborative cross-disciplinary team and be able to give and receive feedback graciously. Expertise with a fully digital workflow and the associated tools is crucial and comfort exploring new technologies is expected.
Curiosity, creativity, and initiative are a must, along with strong interpersonal skills and problem-solving ability for challenges in effective visual communication produced in compliance with strategically set deadlines and guidelines for optimal media delivery. This position will play a key role in ensuring superior educational products and services that effectively address diverse audience needs and perspectives. A successful candidate will be interested in how people learn and will possess a drive to support learning objectives with visual media and engage learners in creative and memorable ways.
- Design and produce illustrations, 2D animations, and graphics that accurately and effectively communicate medical and scientific concepts.
- Research subject matter in primary literature, write and/or edit scripts, storyboard, sketch, render, animate, and create prototypes/mockups as needed
- Conduct peer-reviews of biomedical visualization assets
- Collaborate with colleagues across Product Development, OEE, and Harvard faculty, to develop engaging educational assets
- Adhere to and document processes and procedures for the production of visual materials
- Manage digital assets including meta tagging¿
- Make recommendations for tools and approaches to enhance the educational value of creative educational materials and/or improve efficiency of the production process
- Advise faculty on best practices in biomedical communication
- Additional duties as assigned
This position is based in Boston, but the work may be done fully or primarily remote. Any remote work must be performed in a state in which Harvard is registered to do business (CA*, CT, MA, MD, ME, NH, NY, RI, and VT). - Bachelor's degree plus two years of experience producing high quality biomedical visualizations, including digital formats for online or mobile device delivery.
- Advanced specialized degree may count toward the experience.

- Master's degree from an accredited two-year program in medical illustration/biomedical communications preferred

- Must be highly organized, exceptionally detail-oriented, flexible, and able to collaborate across constituencies to handle multiple illustration, animation, and design projects simultaneously while meeting deadlines
- Competency using Adobe Creative Suite as well as tools for effectively sharing/prototyping/collaborating on visual assets is required
- Strong knowledge of graphic design, typography, color theory, layout, and storyboarding required
- Experience designing graphics for mobile delivery is desired, including an understanding of resolution independent graphics, image optimization, and responsive design
- Experience creating vector-based illustration is a plus
- Experience working with faculty is a plus
- Working knowledge of 3D molecular visualization and 3D modeling is a plus.
- Familiarity with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript is a plus
- Interest in data visualization to enhance medical education materials is a plus
