Our UW Tacoma Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences (SIAS) has an outstanding opportunity for a Media Laboratory & Web Coordinator. Under the general supervision of the Academic Administrator, the Media Laboratory & Web Coordinator will coordinate the operation, maintenance, and scheduling of the media lab and its equipment and maintain the schools web and social media platforms. This will include hiring and overseeing the work of student workers who will support the media lab hours and other activities as needed. Direct support will be provided for TCOM skills-based courses in video production and web and print design, including set-up for in-class activities and support for out-of-class work. Web Content Management Design pages and maintain contact for all SIAS website using Drupal or UWT web editing program. Update and maintain SIAS intranet (SIAS HUB) In coordination with the Director of Administration & Operations, create policy and procedures governing SIAS web and social media presence Coordinate web updates with division coordinators and chairs Coordinate Social Media outlets with Assistant to the Dean and Divisions as needed. Maintain web editing account Oversee web editing access and provide training to other staff on web content management and social media as needed Maintain document file for all webpages in SIAS
Classroom Work Preparation/Planning with Faculty Assist faculty in creation/revision of course assignments Troubleshoot and find solutions for problems with assignments and demonstrations Create course procedures for equipment, software use, and editing assignments
Supervise Student Staff Hire, train, and schedule student staff to ensure access for students to the media lab hours Create training plan and ensure staff meet the needs of students during lab hours Approve staff time and keep within budget provided for student staff
Instruction/Demonstration Support faculty in instruction, demonstrations of course concepts, software and equipment during class and lab time Instruct faculty on Final Cut Pro X and Premiere Pro Premiere Rush best practices and procedures Provide technical assistance on student projects, including course concepts and productions structure Create tutorial worksheets and videos for new equipment and software Maintain media class server (used for student projects) including a student project archive
Laboratory Work Working with students in one-on-one and small group settings to advance their skill set with digital media equipment and computer programs Scheduling and supervision of open lab hours and studio access for TCOM students in production courses Set-up and support for in-class activities Coordinate CP007 studio space use. Coordination and maintenance of video production equipment Coordination and maintenance of shared server space Coordination and maintenance of computer software for courses Assist students with Final Cut Pro X, Premiere Pro, Premiere Rush, Drupal, Dreamweaver, and InDesign software Assist students with proper video production equipment use Research equipment best suited for use in classroom and coursework Purchase equipment for use in the lab Coordinate major lab updates, such as new computers, software, and bulk equipment.

TCOM 320 Principles of Web Design (5) VLPA Examines the theories and techniques of visual and design rhetoric to web design. Discusses how purpose, audience, and context affect the development of web pages and other electronic documents. Explores principles of web-based design, creation, layout, editing, publishing, and maintenance through web design practices. May not be taken for credit, if credit earned in T COM 340.
TCOM 347 Television Criticism and Application (5) VLPA Explores narrative structures and production techniques utilized in television in an integrated manner. Analyzes and discusses critical approaches to television texts and techniques, including use of camera angles, lighting design, sound effects, and editing. Explores the application of basic production to techniques in a hands-on manner.
TCOM 350 Editing and Design for Print Media (5) VLPA Covers elements of print media editing and design including: selection and editing of news copy; headline writing; typography; selection, sizing and cropping of photos; functions of layout; principles of publication design and their practical applications. Students also complete several page design projects as teams.
TCOM 351 Video Production (5, max. 10) VLPA Examination of principles of visual and audio communication, including telling stories using image, movement, spoken words, and other sounds in an integrated manner. Discusses critical approaches to television production and utilizes them in a hands-on manner to develop production skills. Prerequisite: T COM 347.
TCOM 420 Advanced Web Design (5) VLPA Explores advanced concepts, practices, and techniques in large-scale, user-centered web design. Emphasizes interaction design, web usability, and accessibility; design communication and design lifecycle; content management; ongoing site management; and cross-cultural issues. Prerequisite: a minimum grade of 2.0 in TCOM 320.
TCOM 471 Advanced Video Production (5) VLPA Examines the elements of effective video storytelling, including story structure, character development, dialogue, and visual design while shooting and editing fictional short videos. Prerequisite: TCOM 351.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS High school graduate or equivalent and three years full time experience as a Media Services Operator, or equivalent OR two years of college course work in education, radio TV, or related field, and one year of full time related work experience; OR three years of related work experience and training.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS Excellent written and oral communication skills and strong interpersonal skills Organizational skills and the ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks Flexible schedule Experience with Drupal, SharePoint, and Google Sites
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
