We are seeking a Communications Specialist who is an integral member of the Public Relations and Marketing team at the Johns Hopkins Center for Communication Programs (CCP), the largest center housed at the nation's premiere school of public health, the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (BSPH).
The Communications Specialist at CCP is responsible for independently creating content for and managing the center's social media sites, writing and editing for multiple formats, producing multimedia content and other support as needed. This position has high visibility to CCP's leadership team and the ideal candidate is a motivated self-starter and strategic thinker, with a keen understanding of public relations and marketing tactics, particularly in a public health or scientific setting. Strong writing and visual design skills a must, with experience in public health preferred.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities:
- Provide day-to-day management and development of written and visual content for CCP's primary social media channels: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube and more, with a push for greater accessibility, including alt text and thorough descriptions.
- Create social media strategy to meet public relations and marketing goals with an emphasis on audience growth and development, generating regular metrics reports analyzing performance.
- Develop campaigns and brainstorm engaging content for diverse audiences reached by CCP including but not limited to: donors, staff, media, affiliated and unaffiliated friends, advocates, sponsors, partners and supporters of the center and health communication overall.
- Act as a center-wide resource for social media strategy and implementation.
- Create and manage the occasional paid ad campaign, targeting specific audience(s).
- Identify new channels for innovative dissemination and promotion of project materials, experts, events, products.
- Promote visibility of CCP success stories, events, programs, products, staff through a variety of approaches, both digital and print.
- Stay abreast of relevant global health news, developments and events and keep project staff up to date as needed.
- Develop and post content to CCP's blog and website, and working with staff to identify compelling stories and adapt them to social media. May include writing, editing, graphic design, photography, videography and other media formats.
- Maintain consistency of CCP brand across platforms, including the development and updating of flyers, PowerPoint templates, graphics for email marketing and more.
- Handle internal communications by soliciting content from project teams to support public relations and marketing efforts.
- Update and maintain public relations/marketing calendar of conferences, world theme days, project initiatives, meetings and other related events.
- Help create content for and leverage social media channels to grow CCP's reputation as a leader in the field of social and behavior change communication, visibility of the field itself, audience engagement and CCP mailing list.
- Liaise with CCP projects to coordinate event promotion and content uploads, including maintaining CCP's YouTube and playlists.
- Support CCP conference and event planning/participation, including spearheading the upcoming Social and Behavior Change Communication Summit social media content plan, social media toolkits, driving user-generated content and more.
- Participate in monthly gatherings of social media staff from across JHU and BSPH.
- Other duties may be assigned.
Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
- Bachelor's Degree in related field such as Communications, Journalism, or Creative Writing.
- Two years of marketing, communications or public relations agency work experience.
- Advanced degree may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.*
- Able to travel internationally, as needed.
* JHU Equivalency Formula: 18 graduate degree credits (semester hours) may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Special Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Prior experience with digital/social media strategy desired. Familiarity with AP style. Have working knowledge of graphic design, photo and video editing software, preferably Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Premiere Pro, After Effects).
- Ability to identify a center-wide need and take initiative, collaborating with other teams when needed.
- Ability to quickly learn new subjects and absorb new information.
- Sensitive to culturally appropriate language. Experience making technical subjects accessible for lay audiences. Keen eye for detail and organization.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with website maintenance, SEO, SEM, email marketing strongly desired.
- Knowledge of WordPress, Google Analytics, and Mailchimp preferred.
- Illustration, animation, and/or motion design skills a plus.
