The Creative Services Department is currently searching for a Graphic Designer to join their team. This is a casual (part-time, 0 - 19 hours/week), non-exempt position, and is eligible for casual benefits.

The Creative Studio at the world-renowned Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) is seeking a Graphic Designer with a focus on digital design and a proven track record of turning complex concepts into clear designs for various media that inspire, motivate, and amaze audiences about the beauty and wonder of the ocean. The successful candidate will have an intimate understanding of how to visually communicate, and how marketing campaigns work, especially in the nonprofit realm, to support our clients. We work in a fast-paced environment, so the ideal Graphic Designer should be able to hit the ground running, balance several different projects at once, and have the ability to work equally well alone or as part of a team. Applicants who have experience with scientific or nonprofit institutions will be given prime consideration.

Carries out a wide range of complex duties utilizing a versatile skill set to design, create, and package a wide array of multimedia to communicate ideas that inspire, inform, and captivate our audiences.
Digital design: Conceives information architecture, wireframing, user experience design for both web and interactives, implementation using HTML/CSS, social media graphics and banners, static and rich banner ads, and email campaigns
Print design: Develops the overall layout and production design for advertisements, brochures, magazines, and reports
Multimedia design: Creates effective graphics for presentations, displays, and exhibits
Prepares specifications and purchase orders for outside services such as printers, solicits bids for services, and follows jobs through to delivery
Establish and partner with a wide-range of clients from scientists to administrators
Works closely with the Creative Director and other graphic and visual designers to facilitate the distillation of complex scientific concepts into intuitive graphics and visual explanations
Contributes to other projects within Communications as required
Required to act independently and lead in decision making with little to no direction
Mentor and train other members of the Creative team
Direct client interaction experience with the ability to build relationships, understand client vision/direction and present designs and concepts
Highly conceptual thinking in both visual and interaction design as well as a solid understanding of designing intuitive site functionality, interaction, user interfaces, and navigation
Strong desire to define the look and feel of what is next in visual and interaction design and an interest in the latest design trends, technology and social media
An individual who will help foster great creative culture and talent
Writing/editing/proofreading skills a plus
Other duties as deemed necessary by supervisor
Education & Experience
The Graphic Designer must have both a demonstrated artistic/creative ability and a superior knowledge of graphic design and information visualization principles with continuing knowledge of innovations and trends within those fields.
Additionally, the candidate must have:
Bachelor's Degree in Graphic Design, Marketing or related discipline with
4+ years experience in professional design, preferably with a marketing or creative agency
Extensive experience with InDesign, Illustrator, and Photoshop, specifically with mockups, web and email design, and multimedia presentations
Should be tech savvy, familiar with the Mac/Adobe Creative Suite environment, as well as traditional graphic arts tools and equipment
Desire and capacity to stay abreast of current and shifting trends, as well as industry standards and tools
Ability to absorb and apply constructive criticism from peers and clients
Adaptive design eye and skill
Capacity to prioritize workload, and manage multiple projects efficiently and effectively
Excellent oral and written communication skills
