The Global Mining Guidelines Group (GMG) is a non-profit industry organization that facilitates collaboration in the mining industry. GMG is looking for a candidate to oversee the organization, development, and production of its technical content. GMG Working Groups currently cover artificial intelligence, autonomous mining, asset management, cybersecurity, data and interoperability, the electric mine, mineral processing, sustainability, and underground mining.
Note: GMG is headquartered in Ormstown, QC, Canada. This position is open to global applicants but with some variations in employment structure for candidates outside of Canada. It can be done remotely.
ABOUT THE ROLE
The Technical Content and Publications Manager oversees the development and production of high-quality GMG guidelines and other technical documentation (e.g., white papers, reports, case studies, and industry landscapes) at all stages from concept to production. Another key aspect of the role is to create content management strategies for input on industry topics obtained through collaborative events and discussions.
This is an excellent role for someone with a strategic and creative mind, a range of skills in technical communications, and in interest in doing meaningful and varied work with a global community.
The Technical Content and Publications Manager reports to the Chief Engagement and Communications Officer. They manage a small in-house technical content and publications team and coordinate (when required) freelance graphic designers, translators, and other technical communications professionals.
The following is an estimated breakdown of key duties. The workload is expected to vary throughout the year.
Management of Technical Documentation and Publications Lifecycle (40%)
Manage editorial projects for GMG guidelines and other technical publications (e.g., white papers, case studies, reports) from conception to publication.
Take on development and editorial tasks (e.g., writing, editing, author relations) as required for higher risk or challenging projects.
Work with volunteer committees to provide guidance on content development strategy and assist with solving content development issues.
Assist with the development of materials for use in workshops related to technical publications.
Manage the peer review process alongside the project management team.
Manage the technical publications translation strategy (in support of the broader GMG globalization strategy).
Community Reporting and Content Management (30%)
Develop and manage reporting frameworks for tracking, organizing, and communicating input on technical topics from broader communities (e.g., workshop output, discussions and decisions during meetings, industry priorities).
Enable research efforts as needed.
Management and Strategy (20%)
Develop, maintain, optimize, and execute processes and procedures related to technical publications (e.g., style guides, training manuals) and communicate them to the appropriate audiences.
Manage, prioritize, and support the activities of the technical content and publications team.
External and Internal Communications (10%)
Within the broader context of GMG communications strategy, assist with the content strategy related to web content, news releases, volunteer guides, social media posts, and other communications related to technical content and publications.
Communicate directly with volunteers and the broader community about GMG publications.
Provide support related to technical content and publications to other GMG team members.

Education and Experience:
Five years of experience in writing and editing in a technical context.
One year in a management position, preferably with a content strategy component.
Experience managing other technical content professionals.
Bachelor’s degree in English, Communications, Journalism, or another writing-focused field; in another field with additional training in technical writing and editing; or equivalent experience.
Experience working with volunteers an asset.
Experience writing for global audiences and ESL writers an asset.
Experience with the mining industry or adjacent industries (e.g., manufacturing, oil and gas, automotive, processing) and/or IT disciplines (e.g., artificial intelligence, automation, cybersecurity) an asset.
