General Description of the Job Class
Supervise, coordinate and participate in the strategic and conceptual development of system-wide internal communications content across Duke University Health System's digital channels including intranets, video, virtual events, signage, learning management systems, and database distribution platforms. This work includes recommending and building the technology infrastructure and content management guidelines for digital channels from strategy to implementation (system recommendations, governance, operating model, use cases, visual design, and system user onboarding).
Reporting to the Senior Director of Health System Communications & Engagement, this senior digital communications specialist will contribute to enterprise-wide internal communications initiatives that educate, inform and inspire team members about our mission of advancing health together and vision to deliver tomorrow's healthcare today.
Duties and Responsibilities of this Level
Develop, review, maintain, track and update content. Approve messaging and formatting. Includes writing, editing, proofing and formatting a variety of content types for accurate posting and distribution (emails, videos, documents, meeting/live stream recordings, and surveys)
Database oversight and management
Build and test group email distribution lists and intranet postings for publications and communications delivery. Validate content viewing permissions and uploads across technology platforms (Emma, SharePoint/SharePoint Online, Drupal, Zoom, Outlook, You Tube, Vimeo)
Intranet content design and production
Lead UX/UI and continuous improvement of our intranet sites. Select and format artwork, manage site navigation, and roll out new site features.
Digital channels infrastructure planning
Oversee and implement functionality, interactivity tools, improvement standards, and analytics supporting adherence to DUHS' IT protocols, identity/data management guidelines and security requirements
Supervise, coordinate and participate in the strategic and conceptual development of major projects and publications. Consult with clients to develop communications strategies that support identified organizational goals; identify needs, objectives and design approaches; develop schedules and budgets as required for each project.
Serve as editor of the health system intranet home page; manage development and production; make story assignments; direct photography and artwork; track specific budget; assume full responsibility for copy editing and proofreading; devise and codify standard operating procedures.
Develop and maintain professional contacts and affiliations with vendors/contractors, agencies, production and related resources to complete projects effectively and to facilitate and promote the dissemination of internal communications, HR initiatives, business operation updates and organizational priorities.
Prepare budgetary recommendations; monitor expenditure of budgeted funds; identify and hire freelance writing talent as needed.
Develop and maintain working relationships with administrators and clinical staff within an assigned area; consult with administrators and clinical staff on content management and development.
Monitor and analyze communications programs and activities across the Duke University Health System; develop appropriate strategies for communicating information to appropriate target audiences.
Assist in planning and coordinating a proactive information services program for Duke University Health System.

Strong writing/editing/proofing skills.
Attention to detail and ability to manage initiatives from concept to implementation and evaluation
Partners with stakeholders to enable digital communications channels, optimizing the reach and effectiveness of internal communications campaigns.
Understanding and ability to produce content and technologies for digital communications materials. Includes: intranets and web-based publishing platforms, social media and new technology applications (mobile, gamification, apps, etc.)
Trend analysis - provides recommendations on current innovations in digital communications
Demonstrated news judgment, photography experience, and non-linear editing skills
Flexible with schedule, reliable and dependable
Understanding of the tenets of professional journalism
Analytical skills to manage organizational needs, solve complex problems, conduct research, come up with creative ideas, campaigns and communications tactics, and conceptualize realistic and effective messaging goals.
Ability to work quickly and under pressure, including outside of ordinary business hours.

Required Qualifications at this Level
Education: Work requires the ability to perform writing and related activities such as conducting interviews and research, and copy editing normally acquired through attainment of a bachelor's degree in Journalism, English, Communications, Public Relations or a related discipline.
Experience: Work requires four years of directly related experience on assignment under deadlines.
