Description:
The Office of Research, Innovation & Economic Development (ORIED) at the University of Tennessee (UT) seeks applications for a Data Analyst position for its Research Informatics (RI) unit. This unit is responsible for providing data relative to the research enterprise; tracking and reporting research activity aggregates for the organizational units; analyzing changes in external funding support; identifying trends in the university's research performance and benchmarking the university's research activity against other academic institutions. The Data Analyst position is a full-time position that reports to the Director of Research Informatics. This position is responsible for providing accurate data relative to the university community including mining information from the internal (sponsored projects, research expenditures, human resources, and faculty research activity) and external (publications and other bibliometrics as well as any other Higher Education institutional research activity) data sources. The Data Analyst will support a high quality, innovative data analytics program to analyze changes in funding support and to identify trends in the University research performance. The Data Analyst assists in the generation, maintenance, analysis, dissemination, and presentation of information that supports the UT's planning, management, and decision-making processes within the context of becoming a top 10 public research university without a medical school.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Data Querying and Data Aggregation from Internal Data Sources:
- Designing and maintaining queries using standard query language (SQL) and SQL Server Management Studio, RStudio, or other querying applications for the internal databases such as ORIED's Electronic Proposal and Award Routing system (Cayuse SP), UT's Enterprise Resource Planning information system (IRIS), and UT's faculty activity system Elements.
Standard and ad hoc report design and generation using research activity data from various internal data sources:
- Timely and accurate generation and dissemination of standard and on demand reports for use by administrative and academic units across UT.
- Designing and developing tools, methodologies, and applications for data collection, reporting and presentation.
- Developing and maintaining procedures to improve accuracy and efficiency of data querying, report generation, and data dissemination processes.
- Identifying data discrepancies and addressing data quality issues to ensure consistency and integrity of data collection and reporting.
- Consulting with clients to understand data needs and developing tools to collect and deliver requested information.
- Organizing results and conclusions for presentation to multiple audiences.
Data Analysis and Data Visualization:
- Designing and maintaining automated reports and electronic dashboards to inform data driven decisions using software such as Microsoft Power BI and SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS), RStudio, Tableau Desktop, and other applications.
- Contributing to data analysis and data visualization needs via ETL (extract, transform, load) procedures to translate raw data into user friendly formats, trend analyses, static and interactive graphics.
- Performing more complex data analyses which may require the use of advanced data modeling or statistical methods using such software as Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services (SSAS), R programming language and RStudio, and IBM SPSS Statistics.
- Developing and deploying overall subject matter expertise regarding internal and external data sources that support ORIED's mission critical activities.
Data Collection from External Sources:
- Collecting and assisting with the analysis of research activity data from external sources such as National Science Foundation Higher Education Research and Development Survey (NSF HERD), Department of Education Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS), Clarivate's Web of Science, Elsevier Scopus, and Digital Science Dimensions publication/citations databases.
- Merging data from external and internal databases and making correlations across data sets.
Other Tasks as Assigned:
- Providing guidance and technical advice to ORIED customers in the areas of research activity information analyses and reporting.
- Remaining current and learning new skills and software applications as available tools and data analysis needs change over time.
